SCIENCE PART II: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

 Hello everyone!


The end of the semester is coming up, meaning we have assignments to hand in, our exam preparation is beginning, and lots of coffee is being consumed! We must, of course, focus on our studies, but make sure to take some time for yourselves; and take a break! What are you looking forward to during the Winter break? Are any of the activities you may have planned related to STEM?


Last week we focused on inquiry thinking and its purposes within science. As science is not just facts and a rigid method (Mgombelo & Sen, 2022, Week 6, Slide 9), prospective educators and current teachers can implement various strategies and experiments to engage their students, rather than providing factual information and testing them. Interactive labs can fbe an experience for students to have a hands-on learning opportunity to enhance their understanding of the specific content. This week, we will focus on the scientific method and its importance while touching on past experiences that have shaped me into the student and future educator I am. 


In the labs that I have previously done, whether in high school or now university, I have implemented the Scientific Method regularly, which helps to lay out the information of a specific lab. The scientific method helps me and others to look at the evidence they have before making a statement of fact, which is an integral part of science education. The scientific method consists of (Mgombelo & Sen, 2022, Week 6, Slide 11)

  1. Ask a question

  2. Research

  3. Formulate a hypothesis

  4. Test with experimentation

  5. Record and analyze observations and results

  6. Draw a conclusion



Experimenting is an essential part of science as it can be used to see various theories in real-time. My favourite part about science, specifically in high school, was watching my teacher demonstrate the lab before we students could try it out. As a class, we would observe what would be occurring and then have the chance to perform the lab ourselves. This was extremely helpful when I performed the lab as I understood how to complete it. I am a visual learner, and this process helped me. Using the scientific method helped me organize my thoughts and procedures so that we can be confident in the answers that we find. It is a logical and rational order of steps by which scientists come to conclusions about the world around us. It is a process that is important for students to understand how scientists develop their initial theories and the steps they need to get to the final solution. 


I chose to discuss sciences in two blog posts because I genuinely enjoy learning and implementing science in my life. Everything we do or use involves some STEM process (using beauty and personal care, transportation and leisure, healthcare and medicine, etc.). When I become a biology teacher, I hope my students will be open to sharing their past knowledge and how we can build from it to create new concepts and ideas.
